Our Services

Whether your pet needs a simple desexing procedure or a more complex therapy, you'll find it all at our welcoming, high-quality clinic. Featuring two operating theatres and a well-stocked treatment room, we have the facilities needed to give your pet the safe, professional treatment they need and deserve.

When you bring your pet to our clinic, we'll conduct a thorough examination before any procedure gets underway. We do this to ensure we choose the most accurate treatment to resolve your concerns and improve your pet's health and comfort. Before a procedure begins, we run a pre-anaesthetic blood test to make sure there are no underlying concerns we should be aware of. We also administer IV fluids throughout our procedures so that your pet receives the greatest possible care. During all our procedures, a qualified veterinary nurse is on hand to monitor your pet while we send them off to sleep.

We understand seeing your pet in pain or discomfort can be upsetting. At Litchfield Vet Hospital, we do our very best to ensure your pet is kept comfortable and happy for the length of their stay with us. With our professional approach and commitment to the highest level of animal care, you can be confident your pet will be in the best possible hands.

Our Pet Surgery

If your pet requires a more complex procedure or has neurological concerns, you will be referred to our surgical specialist, Dr Kim Smith BVSc (Hons) FACVSc. Available for consultation from our veterinary clinic every second month, Dr Smith has the experience and expertise needed to restore your pet to good health.

Diagnosing Illness Or Problems In Your Pet

Darwin is a beautiful part of the world, but it's also very remote. This means it's not always easy to find a diagnostic laboratory facility dealing specifically with pets. The Litchfield Vet Hospital team offers a solution to this important problem by offering a number of diagnostic tests right here in our clinic.

No longer will you need to worry about arranging blood, urine, stool, or snake venom detection tests for your pet. Our advanced veterinary hospital is able to run extensive tests on-site, giving you the peace of mind that your pet will soon receive an accurate diagnosis. Best of all, we offer same-day results, so you don't need to wonder when you'll be hearing from us.

If your pet has chronically itchy skin or pain around the ears, our diagnostic team can examine skin and ear samples to provide a quick diagnosis and determine an appropriate treatment.

Sometimes, issues aren't obvious or are difficult to diagnose because they're in hard-to-reach areas. We offer digital radiography (x-rays), ultrasound, and endoscopy procedures to provide the most accurate and effective diagnosis and to determine the best course of treatment.

With the extensive range of diagnostic services available at Litchfield Vet Hospital, you can trust your beloved pet will receive efficient and reliable treatment and support.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How should I prepare my pet for surgery?

You don’t have to do too much to prepare your pet for surgery, but it’s important that you don’t feed them after 8 pm on the day before the surgery is scheduled. This ensures the sedatives and anaesthetics we administer will work effectively. You can provide your pets with water overnight, but don’t give them anything on the morning of the surgery.

  • What should we do on the day of the surgery?

Make sure that your pet doesn’t have any food on the day of the surgery so that the anaesthetic will work as intended. You should also take your pet's water bowl away at the start of the day so that they have an empty stomach prior to surgery. Then it’s just a matter of attending the surgery at the scheduled time so that we can take over. We’ll get to work on all of the pre-operative checks to ensure that your pet is ready for surgery.

  • Do you provide postoperative pain relief for my pet?

Yes, we do. We believe that in order to ensure proper recovery and healing after the operation pets should be as pain-free as possible. Our team of trained veterinarians will provide you with some pain relief medication for your pet to take at home so that they remain comfortable during the postoperative period.
